EFELER YOLU

Culture Route

Efeler Yolu is a long-distance cultural hiking route in western Türkiye, connecting the natural landscapes, mountain villages and living heritage of the Aegean region. Stretching for approximately 500 kilometres from Bornova in İzmir to the House of the Virgin Mary in Selçuk, the route crosses the Nif and Bozdağ Mountains, the highlands around Kiraz and the Aydın Mountains before reaching the historic landscape of Ephesus.

More than a hiking trail, Efeler Yolu is a cultural route shaped around the heritage of the efe and zeybek traditions. Along ancient paths, mountain passes and rural landscapes, the route connects villages where traditional culture, local food, agriculture, livestock farming and village life continue to form an important part of the region’s identity.

The route was selected among the Green Destinations Top 100 Good Practice Stories in 2023, highlighting its approach to responsible tourism and its contribution to the preservation and promotion of local natural and cultural heritage.

Hiking the Efeler Yolu

Efeler Yolu consists of 28 stages: 27 main stages and one alternative route. Individual stages are generally between 14 and 24 kilometres long, with terrain ranging from moderate to challenging. Depending on the stage, hikers encounter mountain landscapes, forests, plateaus, traditional villages, historical sites and panoramic viewpoints.

The main route is marked with red-and-white trail signs, while the alternative route uses red-and-yellow markings. Additional red markings indicate access points to mountain summits, cultural heritage sites and significant viewpoints.

Hikers can also use digital trail platforms such as Wikiloc, FATMAP and AllTrails to follow the route and navigate individual stages.

Because of its length, elevation changes and varied terrain, Efeler Yolu is not simply a walking holiday—it is a genuine long-distance hiking experience through the Aegean landscape.
